Invited Speakers

During the fifth Utah Symposium in Science and Literature, we will bring together a poet, and mathematician, and a composer to think together about how they are shaped by the languages they use, and about how they are shaped by their own encounters with work created in languages not their own.

Barry Mazur is currently the Gerhard Gade University Professor of mathematics at Harvard University. In 1982 he was elected a member of the National Academy of Sciences. Mazur has received the Veblen Prize in geometry and the Cole Prize in number theory from the American Mathematical Society.

Alice Fulton is currently the Ann S. Bowers Professor of English at Cornell University.

Fred Lerdahl, American composer of orchestral, chamber, vocal, and piano works that have been performed in the Americas and Europe; he is also active as a writer.
